This brought Britain into alliance with the Arabs in the Ottoman Empire. Many Arabs sought independence from Turkish rule and saw the defeat of the Ottoman Empire as key for securing this goal. They were thus willing to help Britain fight the Turks.</span></p><p><span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif;">In 1915, Great Britain promised Hussein, the Sharif of Mecca, that it would fully support an independent Arab domain under his rule in return for his leading an organised Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire. Helped by a British officer, T. E. Lawrence, the Arabs used guerilla warfare to tie down large Turkish forces in Arabia. You have already read that they tried to limit Jewish immigration. In addition, Earl Peel who led a Commission in 1937 to investigate the causes of the unrest came up with a plan to divide the country between Jews and Arabs.
