It killed 5 million people, or 20% of the population of the German states. For comparison, the Soviet Union lost 12% of its population in the Second Word War. The causes of the war are complex. In the nineteen century it was seen as simply a ‘religious war’. Writing in the 1930s, Veronica Wedgewood thought that it was a pointless war, and ‘confused in its causes’. More recent historians have argued that the war was caused by the political ambition of the Holy Roman Emperor, other princes of the Empire and other European rulers.

You will be able to make your own mind up.

Guiding questions

What was the Thirty Years’ War?

What was the Defenestration of Prague?

What were the wider tensions in the Holy Roman Empire in the early 17th century?

Why was there a revolt in Bohemia in 1618?

Why did the Bohemian Revolt trigger a war which lasted for 30 years?

What were the wider tensions in Europe in the early 17th century?

Was the Thirty Years’ War caused by religion?

Which were more important, the long term or the short term causes of the war?

Before looking at the actual causes of this war, it is important to get an understanding of the unique nature of this war, the context and the key players.

1. What was the Thirty Years’ War?

The ‘Defenestration of Prague’ in May 1618 marked the beginning of a revolt by the Protestants against the increasing control of Bohemia by the Catholics. This revolt triggered a series of wars in central Europe, in the territory of the Holy Roman Empire (largely modern day Germany and Austria), which were to last until the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648.

The wars were fought largely by mercenary armies and involved either directly or indirectly the major countries of Europe: The Holy Roman Empire, Spain, France, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Britain. The war was the most destructive in Europe before the 20th century, killing 20% of the population and destroying towns, villages and farmland and disrupting trade. The devastation was largely caused in what could be called the ‘German states’ and in the nineteenth century the war was seen by German nationalists as a principal cause of Germany’s delayed development as a country.

Despite this, there is some debate as to whether there was, in fact, one war lasting for thirty years. Some historians have seen it as a single war, others have viewed it as a series of separate, distinct conflicts which only have the appearance of being one war in hindsight. A third view is that it was part of a much longer war, for example the struggle between France and Spain which lasted until 1659. However, contemporaries did refer to a ‘thirty years’ war’, for example diplomats at the peace negotiations in Westphalia in 1648.

The war had certain common elements: It was fought in the territory of the Holy Roman Empire, in Germany and, through its different episodes, the Austrian Habsburgs, Germany and the Holy Roman Empire were ever-present. Some have suggested that the war was mainly about religion, but that has been questioned recently. The war ended with a peace treaty that gave political stability to Europe lasting until Napoleon Bonaparte in the 19th century.

What was the Holy Roman Empire?

In AD 800 Charlemagne revived the western half of the old Roman Empire, which had collapsed in AD 476, and took the title ‘Holy Roman Emperor’. This was a large area covering France, Italy and Germany and it soon split into three regions. The eastern part, known as ‘Germany’ kept the title of Holy Roman Empire. In 1512 it took the official title ‘Holy Roman Empire of the German nation’. There was no single nation. The ‘German states’ included over 1 000 political units, some as small as a village owned by one of the 400 or so Imperial Knights! It also included larger states such as the Habsburg territories, Saxony, Brandenburg, Bavaria and the Palatinate. None of these states could survive on their own and so were happy to be in a conglomeration of states under the Emperor.

Map of the Holy Roman Empire at the time of the Thirty Years’ War.

https://www.mtholyoke.edu/courses/rschwart/hist260/30YrsWar1Map.jpg

From 1356 onwards the Emperor was elected by the seven leading Princes of the Empire, rather than by all the member states. The seven Electors were the rulers of Brandenburg, Saxony, Bohemia and the Palatinate, and the Archbishops of Mainz, Cologne and Trier. This made the succession in these states important and it created jealousies with other significant states, such as Bavaria, which did not have the power of the Electors.

The states in the Empire did not want the Emperor to be too strong, as this would limit their powers. Nor did they want the Emperor to be too weak, as this left them vulnerable. In the sixteenth century the Empire was facing an external enemy in the Turkish (Ottoman) Empire to the south east and an internal enemy in the Protestant Reformation. The ruling Catholic Habsburg family saw its position threatened by the gradual take-over of Catholic lands by Protestant rulers. Once the Turkish threat had been defeated in 1606, Ferdinand II decided to take a stronger line against the Protestants, not just for the sake of religion but also to make himself a stronger ruler. This was the root cause of the Thirty Years’ War.

Task One

ATL: Thinking skills

As an introduction you should watch this short (ten minute) history of the war. Long term causes – what were the wider tensions within the Holy Roman Empire?

In 1517 Martin Luther protested against the practices of the Catholic Church, including the selling of indulgences. This began the Protestant Reformation. Luther was condemned by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1521 but Luther’s movement spread in northern Germany during the Peasants’ War. The Holy Roman Empire began to divide on religious lines as rulers chose to be either Protestant or Catholic.

Protestant rulers took over church lands, which were spread throughout the Empire. This was called ‘secularisation’. The ruler of Saxony, for example, expanded his territory considerably by this method.

1555 The Religious Peace of Augsburg. An attempt to stop the conflict being caused by the secularisation of lands. It established the principle of ‘cuius regio, eius religio’ (‘the religion of the ruler is the religion of the territory’) and banned further secularisation.

In the second half of the 16th Century the process of secularisation continued. The Holy Roman Emperor was in a weak position to resist because, as Habsburg Emperor, he was at war against the Turkish Empire in the south. For example, the Emperor had to give religious freedoms in return for the taxes he relied upon to fight the Turks. By 1580 75% of German territory had become Protestant.

1606 Habsburg Empire made a peace treaty with Turkey. Now the Catholics could concentrate on the restitution (return) of Catholic lands.

1607 Bavarian troops entered the free city of Donauworth to restore it as a Catholic city. Maximilian of Bavaria supported the Counter-Reformation. The Holy Roman Emperor (Rudolf) gave him the title to the city and he expelled Protestants.

1607 Protestant rulers joined together in the Evangelical Union.

1609 The Catholic Duke of Cleves-Julich died without an heir and the claimants were Protestant. The Emperor sent his cousin to take control of the region for the Catholics. This began a dispute which could have led to war but other powers were reluctant to get involved. Spain was at war with the Dutch Netherlands and in France had its own wars of religion, shown by the assassination of Henry IV. The Cleves-Julich affair was settled by compromise in 1614, the territory being divided between Protestant and Catholic rulers.

1609 Formation of the Catholic League.

The Protestant Reformation led to the division of the Holy Roman Empire. This division was not just religious but also political, as rulers used Protestantism as a way of gaining territory. The Evangelical Union and the Catholic League meant that there were rival alliances, but there was no suggestion that this would lead to a war, especially as the other powers of Europe had their own problems to deal with. The Thirty Years’ War was to start as a consequence of a local revolt in Bohemia which, unlike Donauworth and Julich-Cleves, was to get out of hand.

2. Short term causes –why did a revolt break out in Bohemia in 1618?

1609 Rudolf II, who was a weak Holy Roman Emperor, granted the ‘Letter of Majesty’ to Bohemia which granted the Bohemians the right to choose their religion, between Catholicism and Protestantism, and to build schools and churches.

1612 Rudolf died and was replaced by Matthias, who was also the King of Bohemia. He supported the Counter-Reformation. The Protestant Church at Klostergrab was closed in 1614 and at Brannau in 1615. Matthias seemed to be going back on the promises of the Letter of Majesty.

1617 Count Ferdinand of Styria was chosen by Matthias, who was in poor health, as his eventual successor as Holy Roman Emperor. In 1617 Ferdinand was also made King-designate of Bohemia. Ferdinand was an ambitious supporter of the Counter-Reformation and his election as King of Bohemia alarmed the Protestants. Ferdinand promised to uphold the ‘Letter of Majesty’ but the destruction of the Protestant Church at Klostergrab seemed to suggest otherwise.

In Brannau Protestants were arrested for objecting to the closure of their church.

Count Thurn, the leader of the Protestants, wanted to uphold the Letter of Majesty so he called for a meeting of the Estates in March 1618. He demanded the release of the Protestants at Brannau. Matthias refused their demands and ordered the Estates to disperse.

In May 1618 the Bohemian Estates met again and again were ordered to disperse. They did not and instead marched to the Hradschin Palace (Prague Castle) where they carried out the defenestration.

Ferdinand was not prepared to compromise. The Protestant nobles of Bohemia were not prepared to compromise. They received support from the Protestant Elector of the Palatinate, Frederick V. In 1619 he became King of Bohemia and this led to the Palatine War, the Bohemian phase of what was to become the Thirty Years’ War.

4. Other Protestants did not join the revolt. On the Catholic side the Spanish Habsburgs sent troops, having signed a truce with the Dutch and wanting to defend the territory of the ‘Spanish Road’. John George of Saxony, a Lutheran Protestant also opposed the revolt and was rewarded with territory. This ended with defeat for Frederick at the Battle of the White Mountain. The Catholics were now in a strong position. The Bohemian throne was made hereditary for the Habsburgs. The electoral title of the Palatinate was transferred to Catholic Bavaria. It was a total Catholic success. The war should have been over!

The Danish phase:

The Protestants were worried. By transferring the electoral title to Bavaria and securing the Bohemian throne the Catholics had secured their control of the Holy Roman Empire. There was now a large Imperial army in northern Europe. The Emperor had been too high handed and the Protestant states in the north tried to find some way to fight back. The Dutch Republic, England and Denmark came together in an alliance in 1624. The Dutch war with Spain had started again in 1621 so it was the Danes who led the fight back.

Christian IV of Denmark wanted influence in the Baltic, and moved first because of his rivalry with Sweden. He met an unexpectedly large Catholic force as Ferdinand raised an army under General Wallenstein, based on the wealth he had gained from the Estates in Bohemia. Christian was defeated. Ferdinand issued the Edict of Restitution, returning all lands secularised since the 1555 Peace of Augsburg. The war should have ended here!

The Swedish phase:

Ferdinand had over-reached himself. Wallenstein’s army of 100 000 was becoming a threat to everyone. Ferdinand was making religious tensions worse when others wanted them to calm down. Spain withdrew support because of the war with the Dutch. Ferdinand agreed to dismiss Wallenstein which only gave the opportunity for another power to step in, which was Sweden.

Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden sent an army to Pomerania in north Germany. He was later portrayed as the saviour of Protestantism but really he was defending Sweden. He was threatened by Poland, who had a rival claim to the Swedish throne and he feared an alliance between the Poles and the Habsburgs. Sweden was supported financially by France which, whilst Catholic, was hoping to weaken Catholic Spain.

Adolphus defeated Tilly at Breitenfeld in the most significant battle of the war (see ‘Practices of War’). The Spanish sent troops, via the Spanish Road, and defeated the Swedes at Nordlingen. This led to the Peace of Prague 1635. The French wars of religion were over. Under Cardinal Richelieu France’s policy was governed by ‘reasons of state’ rather than ‘reasons of religion’. France wanted to break the power of Habsburg Spain which they felt encircled them with the ‘Spanish Road’. By 1642 the new Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III was in a difficult position in northern Germany where the Swedes continued to fight with French financial support. Peace negotiations began. In the meantime the armies were still in the field. By continuing the fight they could secure better peace terms.

In 1645 the Swedes invaded Bohemia. The war came back to where it had started. The Emperor now only had Bavaria to supply his army and a combined French and Swedish army was able to defeat the Imperial forces there, decisively at Allerheim in August 1645. He wants to turn the clock back to 1555 in religious terms. It is also a very clear statement of the dominance of the Emperor over the member states.

Deciding how far the Thirty Years’ War was caused by religion is a complex question. In early modern Europe religion was so much a part of everyday life that it is hard to separate religious motives from other motives. Religious belief was the air that people breathed. However, it is clear that the participants had other motives, notably political and territorial. It is also clear that the character of the war changed over time. It is usually argued that the Thirty Years’ War began as a religious conflict in Bohemia but as it widened it became more secular. This is an over-simplification but it gives us a useful starting point.

Task Two

ATL Thinking skills:

Consider the following statements about the Thirty Years’ War and decide whether they could be used to argue that:

The war was caused by religion (an IDEOLOGICAL war)

The war was not caused by religion. – If so how would you characterise the cause?

The conflict between the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation was an important issue in the Habsburg Empire in the early seventeenth century, as shown by the crises at Donauworth and over the Julich-Cleves succession.

The secularisation of church lands (the taking over of Catholic land by Protestants) in the sixteenth century led to the addition of the land into neighbouring Protestant territories, so increasing the power of the Protestant princes.

Ferdinand of Styria was a keen supporter of the Counter-Reformation and he banned Protestants from civil office in Bohemia and appointed a Catholic council.

The King of Bohemia was one of the seven ‘electors’ of the Holy Roman Emperor, so who controlled Bohemia would also have an influence on who controlled the Empire as a whole.

The survival of the Catholic regents in the defenestration of Prague was interpreted as being due to the intervention of God.
